Contract & Interim Engineering Recruitment

Specialist engineers, available when your project needs them

Contract recruitment isn't about covering a gap with whoever's available. It's about getting a specialist engineer with the right technical background onto your project quickly, engaged the right way, and ready to contribute from day one.

EMT Talent places contract and interim technical professionals for engineering SMEs and project-led businesses.

Based in Sheffield, working with engineering businesses across the UK

EMT Talent works with engineering businesses across the UK. Wherever your project is based, every search gets the same direct, owner-led approach - there's no different tier of service depending on your location.

We're based in Sheffield, but for contract and interim placements, location matters less than it does for a permanent hire - contractors are used to travelling or relocating for the length of a project, and we place them accordingly.

We've had contractors stay in campervans for the duration of a project, supplied Commissioning Engineers to sites across the south of England and into Scotland, and placed engineers on overseas projects too. Wherever your project is, the search works the same way.

That said, we do have particularly deep contractor networks close to home, across South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Derbyshire, the East Midlands and the West Midlands (having previously lived in Coventry ourselves) - useful if your project happens to be nearby, but never a limit on what project locations we place people.

What makes contract recruitment different

A permanent hire shapes how your business operates for years. A contract or interim hire solves something more immediate - a defined project, a skills gap, a capacity issue with a clear start and end point.

That means speed and specificity matter more than long-term cultural fit. You need someone who already has the technical background to be productive fast, engaged in a way that's compliant and straightforward for your business, with the right documentation in place before they set foot on site.

How we engage contractors

We place contractors in the way that works best for the individual and for you, and we handle the compliance behind it either way:

  • Limited Company - for contractors operating through their own limited company
  • Umbrella - we work with professional, trusted umbrella providers, so contractors are engaged compliantly on PAYE terms without you needing to manage that relationship directly
  • CIS - for construction-industry-status engagements where that applies

Whichever route applies, we always verify the contractor has the correct documentation in place before placement - qualifications, certifications, and insurances - so you're not left checking that yourself once someone's already on site.

IR35 sits behind most of these decisions, and we work with it as a matter of course. Status determinations are ultimately your responsibility as the end client, but we help make the process straightforward - engaging contractors through whichever route matches the determination you've made, and working with our umbrella partners where an inside-IR35 engagement is the right fit.

If you're unsure how a role should be classified, we'd always recommend checking with your accountant or an IR35 specialist before the search begins.

Every search is handled directly by the owner - no handoffs between researchers and consultants.

Do you help with IR35 determination?

We're familiar with IR35 and work with it day to day, engaging contractors through the appropriate route once a status determination has been made. We're not a substitute for your own accountant or an IR35 specialist, but we make sure the engagement itself is set up correctly once you know where a role stands.
