The Challenge

Cetix required a SCADA Project Manager to support the delivery of highly complex automation and system integration projects.

The company designs, builds and maintains automation control systems that keep critical industries operating safely, efficiently and without interruption. Their work spans sectors including oil & gas, energy, manufacturing and large-scale infrastructure.

The successful candidate needed to demonstrate strong project management capability alongside experience in the following areas:

  • A solid understanding of SCADA and PLC control systems
  • The ability to coordinate engineering teams, customers and suppliers to ensure projects are delivered successfully
  • Experience taking ownership of control system projects from contract award through to commissioning, managing scope, programme, cost and client relationships throughout
  • Confidence building long-term client relationships whilst maintaining control of project delivery

These are not straightforward appointments.

Many professionals operating at this level work on a self-employed contract basis and command significant day rates. In addition, the automation sector remains heavily skills-short, creating a gap between the number of available opportunities and suitably qualified candidates.

Why Traditional Recruitment Was Not Working

Cetix delivers projects across a wide range of industries and applications, meaning previous automation project experience alone did not necessarily translate into being a suitable fit.

The company specifically wanted someone who had remained technically involved throughout their career, with hands-on experience of PLC programming and exposure to SCADA systems.

The HR Manager advised that they had been searching for the right individual for more than six months.

Given the combination of technical expertise, project ownership and sector exposure required, this was not surprising.

The Recruitment Approach

Given the technical nature of the appointment, the search focused on identifying engineers and project professionals working within comparable automation and systems integration businesses.

A detailed market mapping exercise was undertaken, targeting individuals with exposure to control systems, process automation and turnkey project delivery.

This was not a role that could be filled through job advertising alone.

Many of the professionals approached were operating as contractors and had little motivation to consider permanent opportunities.

After several weeks of targeted search activity, a shortlist was developed and the search extended beyond the local area.

Ultimately, a highly experienced professional was identified who was willing to relocate with his family for the right long-term opportunity.

The Outcome

Cetix appointed a Project Manager with more than twenty years' experience in automation, SCADA and PLC control systems.

Alongside significant practical experience, the successful candidate also held a Bachelor's Degree in Science and Technology and a Master's Degree in Automation, Control and Robotics.

It later transpired that they had previously delivered automation controls work on some of the same sites where Cetix currently operates, providing immediate familiarity with the environments, standards and customer expectations involved.

Final Impact

This project demonstrates the ability to secure highly specialised professionals within automation and control environments where technical capability, sector experience and long-term commitment are critical to success.
